Vietnam's third largest city and former imperial capital was located just 45 miles south of the DMZ. It was a home to Buddhist opposition against the South Vietnamese government in the early 1960s -- and the site of several violent protests and crackdowns.
During the Vietnam War, the area just south of the DMZ was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of the conflict. Dong Ha, Quang Tri, Con Thien, Cam Lo, Camp Carroll, the Rockpile, Khe Sanh, Lang Vay, the Ashau Valley, Hamburger Hill these became almost household names in the USA as, year after year, TV pictueres and casualty figures provided Americans with their daily evening dose of the war.
